Kevin Costner has shared his thoughts about Whitney Houston’s funeral, revealing the reasons behind his decision to avoid cutting her eulogy short. The two stars appeared together in the 1992 movie ‘The Bodyguard’; Costner played the character of Houston’s bodyguard and love interest. The singer died in 2012, and Costner spoke at her funeral afterward, sharing more details about his 17-minute speech during his recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard. The Waterworld star also revealed how he ignored advice to make his eulogy shorter.

“I had been working on this speech…and I tried to compile everything I wanted to do and finally crafted this speech,” he elaborated. Costner said that somebody had mentioned they should keep his remarks shorter because CNN was attending and needed commercial breaks, but he refused this advice. He told them that they could play commercials while he spoke, and he would not be truncating his speech.

The actor also discussed his initial hesitancy about speaking at the funeral and how he had been encouraged by Houston’s cousin and music legend, Dionne Warwick. Costner reflects on the weight he felt about what he would say about “this little girl.” In addition, he shared his feelings about Houston’s mega-hit rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” and its ubiquity in The Bodyguard.
