In Sussex, a teenage boy has been found guilty of murdering a 17-year-old boy at a crowded party. Charlie Cosser died two days after he was stabbed three times in the chest at the outdoor event in West Sussex. The defendant, who was 16 at the time of the attack and cannot be named for legal reasons, was unanimously convicted of murder and having a bladed article. He now faces life imprisonment.
During the trial at Brighton Crown Court, the jury heard how a fight broke out between the defendant, Charlie and two other boys on the dancefloor after the defendant and his friends were asked to leave the party. Members of Charlie’s family cried and hugged each other as the verdict was given at court. A friend of the defendant said he appeared “angry” and had drunk an “excessive amount” of vodka.
Mr Cosser was still conscious when the police arrived at 00:30 BST, and was able to tell officers his name and address. However, he suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to hospital due to internal bleeding caused by a cut to a main artery. The knife used in the murder has not been found.
The defendant had previously pleaded guilty to murder during an initial appearance at court last year. However, he successfully applied to withdraw the plea before sentencing. Charlie’s family has previously paid tribute to him as a “beautiful boy” with a “kind heart”. The defendant will be sentenced on 19 June
