Metallica’s James Hetfield reveals the nightmares he has before heading out on tour

Metallica frontman James Hetfield says he experiences odd nightmares right before touring with the band. Speaking on The Metallica Report podcast, Hetfield explained that he begins to “doubt himself” and feel “insecure” ahead of hitting the road for a series of shows. The interview comes as Metallica continues its M27 dates across European regions, and the North American leg is slated to start in August in support of the band’s latest album, 72 Seasons.

Hetfield revealed that he experiences anxieties before going on tour, like forgetting lyrics or getting the guitar neck that’s made of rubber with only two strings on it. He also shares other typical things like the unavailability of their roadie, and the guitar cord not letting him get to the microphone. The singer, however, said that this “has to happen,” and he doesn’t “freak out over it.” Despite this, Hetfield said he practices to build muscle memory and explained that anxiety and faith are part of the cycle.

The Metallica singer revealed that he has nightmares about the band members goofing off backstage or arriving at a gig, wondering where everyone is or where his stuff is. Nevertheless, Hetfield noted that as soon as they get on stage, everything is fine, “and all you do is you practice, and then you build – that comes back pretty quickly.”

Last month, Metallica played their longest song, Inamorata, live for the first time during a concert in Munich, Germany. The band shared a pro-shoot footage of their Master Of Puppets performance from the tour recently. Listeners can catch the podcast in full here or on Spotify
