Bat For Lashes – ‘The Dream Of Delphi’ review: spiralling symphonies written in the patient gaze of new motherhood

UK singer Natasha Khan, more commonly known as Bat For Lashes, has emerged from five years of creative solitude with her sixth album, “The Dream Of Delphi”. Born out of introspection and socially isolated during the pandemic, Khan delved into her art while navigating motherhood. The album’s titular track is a pagan invocation for her newborn daughter. Khan perceives herself as the “MotherWitch”, an earthy moniker she first embodied in 2023 upon the release of her self-illustrated oracle card deck of the same name, depicting women, goddesses, and crones, witches, monsters – and mothers.

Khan’s curiosity is palpable throughout the album. As she navigates motherhood and the world her child is born into, she imparts heart-warming wisdom to her daughter in “Letter To My Daughter”. While Khan coins tracks her “song poems”, she often gives way to the instrumental, trusting music to convey what lyrics cannot. Written in the patient gaze of parenting for similarly patient ears, “The Dream Of Delphi” is an intuitive scrapbook of first-time motherhood and a symbiotic symphony to unlocking unknown parameters of love.

The album is not as immediate as Bat For Lashes’ previous works and is a testament to the creative metamorphosis Khan has undergone. She has transformed herself creatively into a heightened archetype of femininity, herself malleable and newborn. The album is a treasure trove of Khan’s growth, telling a tale of self-discovery, death, and rebirth, and is sure to be welcomed by all Bat For Lashes fans.

“The Dream Of Delphi” is set to be released on May 31, 2024, on Mercury KX records
