Actress Halle Berry has released a new video on social media in which she reflects on her role in the 1994 film, The Flintstones, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Berry posted the video on her Instagram page and said that she was doing it to please her fans who message her every year about the film. In the video, Berry dissects a scene from the film that introduces her character, a Black woman, to on-screen protagonists Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble. She spoke about her voice and hairstyle in the film, calling the latter “iconic,” and expressed how the role felt “important” to her.
“Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing but, you know, The Flintstones was the fabric of our culture,” Berry said. “I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, Black women especially. While it was silly, and it was over the top and campy, I knew then how important this little part in this big movie actually would be.” Berry made her film debut just three years prior to The Flintstones in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever.
Despite Netflix scrapping entirely a sci-fi film called The Mothership that starred Berry, she remains busy with two completed projects scheduled for release this year. One of them is Netflix’s The Union, an action-comedy that also stars Mark Wahlberg. The other is a supernatural horror film called Never Let Go. Berry will also star in the forthcoming movie Maude vs Maude alongside Angelina Jolie. Last December, Berry admitted that the two actors “had a rocky start” to their working relationship
