During the UK version of The Voice in 2012, The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue found himself unable to keep up with Welsh crooner Tom Jones in an intense night of drinking. The two judges were joined by Jessie J and Will.i.am. O’Donoghue recounted the story of the night they went drinking on BBC Radio Wales, revealing that Jones regaled him with stories of Elvis and the Rat Pack, and insisted they continue to drink champagne every time a bottle was finished. O’Donoghue’s determination to keep up ultimately led to a hospital visit, as his heart flipped into a different rhythm. He ended up missing a day or two of filming for The Voice.
The morning after the long drinking session, O’Donoghue noticed something was wrong and went to the hospital where he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation from drinking nothing but champagne for six hours. O’Donoghue admitted that it was his own fault for not stopping drinking earlier, but he also shared his admiration for Jones despite being from his father’s era. He described the Welshman as a man’s man who grew up in the coal mines, loved songs and drinking.
The Script last released their new single Both Ways in August, which is taken from their upcoming LP Satellites, set for release in August. The new album comes following the death of the band’s co-founder and guitarist, Mark Sheehan, in April 2020, following a brief illness. As for Tom Jones, he is set to appear at multiple live performances this year, including the Byron Bay festival Bluesfest and the Plymouth Summer Sessions next month
