Coldplay delighted the crowd at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton by dedicating a song to the town’s football club. The song titled “Orange” was a tribute to Luton Town Football Club and its fans. It referred to the team playing in orange, while their rivals Watford FC played in yellow. Lead singer Chris Martin, who headlined the festival, introduced the song by saying it may not be good enough to be played again but was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
At the start of the performance, Martin asked the local audience to “relax” as he approached the end of the set. He then explained to the crowd that he had heard people in Luton might have been concerned if he sang their hit song “Yellow” because of the Hatters and Kenilworth Road stadium, home of Luton Town FC.
During the show, Martin reminded the audience to trust him. “It reached me a while ago,” he said. “That there were some people in Luton who were worried or disgruntled, and maybe even angry about the concept of our band coming here and singing a song called Yellow.” Martin’s response to the fears was the song “Orange,” which he wrote the night before.
The song’s chorus included the lyrics, “I love you Luton,” which Martin sang before adding that the song had “no disrespect to Watford.” Justin Dealey, a BBC Three Counties radio host who started the campaign to have Coldplay change the lyrics of “Yellow” to “Orange,” alongside Luton resident Bex Jones, said: “I knew something special was coming.
