CMAT, the Irish musician, spoke to NME about her home country’s incredible cultural impact. Speaking at the Ivor Novellos in London, CMAT was nominated for Best Album for Crazymad, For Me, and while she was convinced she wouldn’t win, being nominated was a dream come true. During the event, CMAT also revealed that work is already underway on her third album.
The artist, whose real name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, attributed Ireland’s current cultural dominance to the population’s ability to make the best of difficult situations. She also acknowledged the post-colonial problems Ireland faced, along with a lack of government support and the country’s impressive output of creative individuals.
CMAT’s musical contemporaries, including KNEECAP, Fontaines D.C., The Mary Wallopers, and NewDad, are also among some of Ireland’s most acclaimed performers. Daragh Lynch of Lankum previously spoke to NME about Ireland’s current cultural landscape, with some of the country’s most in-demand names including Cillian Murphy, Saoirse Ronan, and Barry Keoghan.
When asked about the direction of her new music, CMAT replied that she is working on a country album. She plans to make music that is specific to her and excited to release some of the weirdest music of her life.
Finally, when asked about Bruce Springsteen, the star revealed she would be excited to meet the musician. She described Springsteen as sexy and praised him for his ability to write so specifically about his hometown and where he is from
