In response to John Cleese’s recent comment stating that Michael Palin is “sweet, kind, slightly boring,” Palin has fired back, claiming that his work with Monty Python made Cleese’s success possible. During his appearance on ITV’s This Morning, Palin stated that while Cleese may be “scintillating” in his own right, he couldn’t have made certain sketches work without Palin’s supporting characters.

Palin claimed that he has always enjoyed playing boring characters throughout his career, particularly the most boring man in Yorkshire from his comedy series Ripping Yarns. He stated that he believes that playing these types of roles particularly frustrates people who think they are interesting.

Palin, Cleese, and other Monty Python members made their debut on television with the hit BBC sketch series Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which ran from 1969 to 1974. They later transitioned to the big screen, creating Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975, Monty Python’s Life of Brian in 1979, and Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life in 1983.

While the group did briefly reunite in 2014 for the variety show Monty Python Live (Mostly), they have since split up, leading to disagreements over finances between the members. Palin stated that he isn’t surprised by the disputes, attributing them to lifestyle clashes rather than comedic differences. While Cleese continues to work on projects such as stage adaptations of Life of Brian and Fawlty Towers, he recently expressed financial struggles and the need to continue working well into his eighties
