North Shields is set to welcome a brand new club, Are You Affiliated (AYA), thanks to investment secured by founder Geoff Kirkwood, better known as Man Power. After two years of successful pop-up shows at the King Street Social Club, the organisers were able to purchase and renovate a space on the upper floor of Phoenix House. The new venue will feature a high-performance sound system and is available for promoters to book for gigs and events.
AYA will emphasise community and aims to provide an affordable option for local grassroots promoters to continue growing the vibrant regional music scene. Founder Man Power states that they do not intend to replace King Street Social Club, which is a working-class community organisation. Instead, they want to coexist with them while supporting the organisation financially and creating something entirely new through the fusion of both cultures.
The new club will also continue hosting Me Me Me parties, which started in the building in 2022 and have welcomed renowned DJs such as Skream, Daniel Avery, and Artwork. The opening of AYA is significant at a time when several venues are shutting down across the UK, with an average of five venues closing each week.
However, the team behind AYA has decided to “buck the trend” by filling the gap and supporting other at-risk communities and cultures. Those interested in using the space can contact the club via email. The opening of the venue is expected to contribute to the lively regional music scene in North Shields and bring together the local community.
