Sheffield music venue The Leadmill wins court battle following eviction threats

After a two-year legal battle with building owners, The Leadmill, Sheffield’s longest-running music venue, has won its recent court battle. Last May, the venue was served an eviction notice after its landlords submitted an application for a premises licence. Electric Group had purchased the venue in 2017, and was looking to remove the management team to run the space themselves. As a result, The Leadmill was at risk of closing down after 43 years.

“If granted, this would allow them to operate their own business from this location,” The Leadmill explained on Instagram last year. “This could result in The Leadmill ceasing to exist after 43 years.” The case was taken to court last May 20-21, where The Leadmill moved a step closer to winning the ongoing battle against the building’s landlords.

Electric Brixton London, SWX Bristol, and NX Newcastle comprises the Electric Group. From this location, they were hoping to operate their own business. The name Electric Sheffield had also been registered in 2023. The Leadmill confirmed their victory through an Instagram post yesterday.

The venue has become a staple in Sheffield’s music scene for over four decades. It opened in 1980, hosting bands like Pulp and Arctic Monkeys. The Leadmill’s owners are happy with the ruling and stated that they are committed to bringing excellent live music and events to the region for years to come
