Franchino, the famous Italian disco and progressive trance DJ and vocalist, has passed away at the age of 71. His death was confirmed by his management through a post on Instagram. Francesco Principato (Franchino) died on Sunday (May 19) after being hospitalized for weeks due to an illness. Franchino’s management has also confirmed that a private funeral will be held for his loved ones.
According to a profile in the Italian newspaper, Il Tirenno, Franchino was diagnosed with carcinoma in the early 2000s, which he battled until his death. Carcinoma is a form of cancer that begins in cells making up the skin or tissue lining organs, such as the kidneys or liver.
Franchino began his DJ career in 1970 at the 7eleven Disco Club in Florence, Italy, before moving on to residencies across the nation. After spending an extended period in Ibiza, Franchino developed a liking for progressive trance and began pioneering the genre in Italy in the late eighties and early nineties.
Franchino’s unique style involved mixing elements of disco and progressive trance with his own vocals and samples recorded from the crowd at his gigs. Because of his vocal work, Franchino was nicknamed “the storyteller,” as he narrated fictitious stories throughout his sets.
