Emergency services, including the police, ambulance and fire and rescue teams, are conducting an extensive search operation following an incident in which two teenage boys got into difficulty in the River Tyne in Northumberland, according to the Northumbria Police. The boys were said to have entered the water near Ovingham Bridge, Ovingham, on Saturday, 5th September 2020, at around 3:30 p.m. BST. The great north air ambulance service was also called in for support, the North East Ambulance Service said. The fire and rescue team has deployed a number of senior officers as well as two swift water rescue units from Pegswood.
Due to the ongoing search, a large multi-agency team is working in the area, ensuring the safety of the public, and asking that people do not gather in the area where possible to allow the rescue team to work without any hindrance from the crowd. The police have issued a warning to the public, urging them to avoid entering the water in the area unless they are experienced in swimming in such challenging conditions.
The Northumberland Fire and Rescue team made a public statement indicating that it is working with the police, ambulance service, and mountain rescue in the ongoing operation. Further, the spokesperson issued a warning to the public, requesting them to maintain their safety. The police have asked anyone with any information related to the incident to contact them as soon as possible.
People with knowledge of the incident are requested to get in touch with the police by calling the number 101 and providing the reference NP-20200905-0656. Anyone who is willing to share any information related to the incident but does not want to be identified may also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
