Cillian Murphy has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming film 28 Years Later. News of the film was first announced earlier this year, with confirmation that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the duo behind the 2002 film 28 Days Later, would be returning to the franchise. The film, scheduled for release on June 20, 2025, will star Murphy alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.
Murphy, who first rose to fame with his performance in 28 Days Later, has been cast in an executive producer role. Murphy’s return to the franchise was announced by Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman, who teased that he would appear “in a surprising way and in a way that grows.”
28 Years Later will be the first entry in a new trilogy, with Garland set to write and produce all three. Boyle is only expected to return for the first installment, with Nia DaCosta reportedly in talks to direct the second. Each film is being made with a budget in the region of $75 million (£59 million).
Boyle and Murphy have spoken about a follow-up to their hit zombie flick in the past. While Murphy said he’s now too old for it, Boyle revealed that Garland had written a script titled 28 Months Later a few years ago, but nothing came of it.
