John Oates, known for being one half of the pop duo Hall & Oates, has opened up about his relationship with former bandmate Daryl Hall in a recent interview with Good Morning America. The two musicians are currently in a legal battle after Hall sued Oates following his plan to sell a business stake in November 2020. However, Oates claimed in the interview that their working relationship has been distant for some time and has been limited to playing onstage where they “trotted out the hits.”
Oates admitted that their friendship “wasn’t as tight as people might imagine.” Even before the lawsuit, he claimed that they “never really talked to each other” and only showed up at shows individually, played together, and then went their separate ways. He said that there was no animosity, but their relationship wasn’t as close as many fans imagined.
When asked if he had a message for Hall, Oates said, “I love you like a brother…but you know what? Brothers have disagreements, families grow apart…[I] would say, I wish him the best. I hope that he has everything he wants in life. And that he can pursue his dream of being a respected solo artist, which I believe is something that he’s always wanted.”
Oates has also said that he has “moved on” from the duo and shot down the possibility of any future reunions. However, he remains proud of what Hall & Oates created together. Oates has just released a new album titled ‘Reunion.’
Despite their legal battle, it seems that there is no animosity between the two musicians. Oates referred to Hall as an “amazing individual” and stated that they simply have different strategies for their professional and personal lives. While their relationship may not have been as close as many fans believed, Oates wished Hall the best in his solo career and appeared to hold no ill-feelings towards his former bandmate
