Chicago-based band Dehd has released their fifth studio album, Poetry, via Fat Possum Records to kick off 2024. The album comes after the success of their previous release, Blue Skies and its hit single, “Bad Love”. To create the album, the band travelled to distinct locations, starting with Kempf’s off-grid Earthship in Taos, New Mexico. Here, they spent time writing songs while chopping wood to keep warm during the day. The band then travelled to a cabin on the Puget Sound, setting up their second writing camp where they were surrounded by chilly waters and time marked only by the tides. Leaving Chicago for the writing process was a significant moment, marking a distinct shift for the band.
Together, Emily Kempf, Ryan Levine, and Eric McGrady finalized the songs that made up Poetry in their warehouse home in Chicago, where they’ve been rehearsing and writing for almost a decade. Friend and producer Ziyad Asrar, who co-produced all three of Whitney’s albums, contributed to co-producing Poetry alongside the band’s Jason Balla at Palisade Studio.
Influences on the record include Velvet Underground, The Strokes, The Jesus and Mary Chain, but with a happy, upbeat energy and the hooks reminiscent of Weezer. Music video “Dog Days” showcases the band’s classic garage rock sound, gaining over ten million views and leaving fans eager to see what Poetry will bring.
