After a period of co-operation, Plaid Cymru has decided to end their agreement with the Labour party in the Senedd. The announcement comes from the leader of Plaid Cymru, Rhun ap Iorwerth. Although he is proud of what the agreement achieved, he has serious concerns regarding various issues, including First Minister Vaughan Gething’s leadership campaign donation of £200,000.
This decision follows a distressing week in the Senedd, which saw Mr Gething sacking his minister for social partnership, Hannah Blythyn, due to alleged leaks of text messages to the media. Blythyn denied the allegations, and consequently, the situation created a vast amount of controversy and scrutiny regarding Mr Gething.
Initially, the co-operation between the two parties was agreed after the 2021 Senedd election. Although Labour secured 30 seats, they did not gain an outright majority. Therefore, they worked with Plaid Cymru in specific policy areas. The recent developments have created significant tension, with Mr Gething stating disappointment that Plaid Cymru has “walked away” from the opportunity to deliver for the people of Wales.
