Brad Pitt revealed in a 2019 interview with JOE, alongside Once Upon A Time In Hollywood co-star Margot Robbie, that he based his Snatch performance on a character from 1990s British sitcom Father Ted. Pitt explained that he watched a guest star on the show and “somehow I landed in the right spot, on a Hail Mary.” Irish actor and comedian Pat Shortt, who played Tom in Father Ted, said he was “flattered” about his character possibly inspiring Pitt’s performance.
Pitt discussed taking on different accents in roles during the interview, including his Irish accent in The Devil’s Own and his Irish Traveller accent in Snatch. He said that his “Pikey” accent in Snatch was “pretty good,” which he based on a performance by a guest star in Father Ted. “Somehow I landed in the right spot, on a Hail Mary,” he added.
Shortt revealed how Pitt was introduced to his character on Father Ted. He said that Pitt had an Irish voice coach who sent him tapes to do research, while he was supposedly in London, but was spending more time with Jennifer Aniston, who he was dating at the time. According to Shortt, nobody knows if his character or Jon Kenny’s Fred Rickwood was the inspiration behind Pitt’s performance.
