The long-awaited trailer for the upcoming film adaption of the popular musical, Wicked, has finally been released. Starring the talented Cynthia Erivo, popstar Ariana Grande, and the beloved Jeff Goldblum, the film follows the untold story of the witches of Oz. The trailer takes us to a hyper-realistic fantasy land, and features the film’s two stars singing some of its most iconic tracks for the first time.
Set at Shiz University, the film tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (portrayed by Erivo) and Glinda (Grande). As they navigate their differences and discover Elphaba’s powers, they also uncover the truth about the Wizard, played by Goldblum. The trailer offers glimpses of the film’s darker elements, as well as references to The Wizard of Oz.
The story, adapted by Winnie Holzman, is based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The music and lyrics for the musical were written by Stephen Schwartz, and it has been on Broadway for over 20 years.
Directed by Jon M. Chu and produced by Marc Platt, the film’s star-studded cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, and Michelle Yeoh. The film has been split into two parts, with the first set to release on November 28, 2022, and the second coming out on the same date in 2025.
