Lost cheque blamed for Harry and Meghan's charity error

The Archewell Foundation, a charity founded by Prince Harry and Meghan, has been given a “delinquency notice” by US authorities, preventing the organisation from operating until the registration process is completed. Although the couple claim that all of the charity’s documentation was submitted on time, the required cheque was not received. Archewell has since re-sent the payment and believes the issue will be resolved “quickly”. The notice from the State of California Department of Justice advises that until the registration has been officially recognised, Archewell is not permitted to carry out charities acts, such as raising or distributing charitable funds.

While the registration issue is likely to be resolved soon, the absence of charitable donations will have a detrimental effect on those who rely on Archewell’s support. The foundation made the decision to donate $1.2m (£956,000) to several causes last year, including those supporting gender justice and civil rights. The charity also donated $100,000 (£80,000) to the Halo Trust, a mining charity that was once supported by Princess Diana. Last year’s tax filings displayed that Archewell had wealthy assets totalling up to $11m (£9m).

Prince Harry and Meghan started Archewell after moving to the US and stepping down from royal duties. More recently, the couple overhauled their operation, having established a new website, Sussex.com, under the title of the Office of Prince Harry and Meghan. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have recently completed a visit to Nigeria, and earlier this year, UK celebrations marked the 10-year anniversary of the Invictus Games. Despite this, registering Archewell as a charity will remain the couple’s priority until the issue is resolved
