It has been confirmed that fans of the hit drama series, Shogun, will finally be getting their long-awaited second season. The first season, which premiered back in February, concluded just last month and was available in the United States via streaming service Hulu and FX, and in the UK via Disney+.
The series is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, which had previously been adapted into a 1980 American miniseries. This recent adaptation has been overseen by the husband-and-wife creative team of Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, with Marks being a co-writer of Top Gun: Maverick.
Set in the year 1600, Shogun depicts life in Japan where Lord Yoshii Toranaga, portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada, is fighting for his life as his enemies unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby village, the character of John Blackthorne, portrayed by Jarvis, is introduced.
Despite rumours that there would not be a season two, Deadline has confirmed that Sanada has signed a new deal to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga for the next instalment of the series. Shogun has been six years in the making and was the most expensive show ever produced by FX.
Co-creator and producer Mark previously spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s finale, stating that the conclusion was purposely aligned with the end of the book.
