Eloy Casagrande explains “complicated” decision to leave Sepultura for Slipknot

Former Sepultura drummer Eloy Casagrande has spoken up about leaving the Brazilian metal band to join the vacant drummer position in Slipknot earlier this year. According to a recent Veja Sao Paulo interview, Casagrande said that he asked about playing in both bands but had to leave Sepultura after being told he would have to be exclusive to Slipknot. He also revealed that after his initial audition with Slipknot, they threw new ideas at him to see what his songwriting was like to test him in every way. It took Slipknot until early February to decide whether Casagrande was a fit for their band or not, after which he received a formal invitation to join them.

Casagrande made his official debut with Slipknot during a last-minute intimate club show at the Pappy + Harriet’s barbecue bar in California on April 25. The surprise gig marked the band’s first performance since parting ways with former drummer Jay Weinberg late last year and was announced just one day prior to the show date. Later that week, they headlined the Sick New World festival in Las Vegas.

Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan, the percussionist and founding member of Slipknot, recently told NME that the band is “going back to basics” this year to celebrate their 25th anniversary and that he’s ready to kick everybody in the face again in small venues. Speaking to NME about what Slipknot has planned for 2024, Crahan said that he’s ready to move on from what has been and move onto a world that he knows needs to be.
