Following the success of the 2021 supernatural horror film The Pope’s Exorcist, a sequel has been announced. The film, directed by Julius Avery, starred Russell Crowe as Father Gabriele Amorth, a Catholic priest who claimed to have conducted thousands of exorcisms over his career. The movie was based on Amorth’s books, An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, which were released in 1990 and 1992, respectively. Other cast members in the film included Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, and Franco Nero.
The movie turned out to be an unexpected commercial success, grossing $76.9 million (£61.25 million) on an $18 million (£14 million) budget. The film’s producer, Jeff Katz, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a sequel had been given the green light. He thanked the fans of the movie and urged them to gas up their Lambrettas and get ready to ride. Crowe is expected to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel.
In April 2023, there were reports that early development on a sequel was already underway, as per Bloody Disgusting. Vatican representatives denounced the original movie as “unreliable splatter” in a statement made on behalf of the International Association of Exorcists (IAE). They expressed concern that the film would present exorcisms as monstrous and frightening, as opposed to the obedient directives established by the Catholic Church.
Despite this, the movie went on to become a box office hit, and its success has prompted the production team to create a sequel. Fans of the original movie can look forward to continuing the story of Father Gabrielle Amorth and his unique experiences as a Catholic exorcist
