The Liverpool City Council has launched the ‘Reducing Parental Conflict’ program to help reduce frequent arguments between parents. Several studies have revealed the adverse consequences of parental conflict on children’s mental health. This program aims to provide support services to help parents reduce conflict and improve the quality of life for their children. It includes relationship advice, parental programs, and training for practitioners working with families. The program will help to avoid the damage caused by parental conflict to children and increase support and signposting of local authority and partner services.
Unresolved arguing, silence, or lack of respect are some of the damaging ways parents can engage in a conflict within a household. According to the City Council,12% of children are living with at least one parent who reports experiencing relationship distress. To help address this issue, the program will train staff to have those difficult conversations with parents about resolving conflicts through communication, and practical guidance. It aims to help families find the support that works for them.
Cllr Liz Parsons, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Service, says that “with everyday pressures, some level of disagreement between parents or carers can be expected.” However, the Reducing Parental Conflict program aims to minimize frequent and unresolved conflicts in front of children due to the negative impact on their health and long-term life chances. Through impactful videos and images, the Council is highlighting the harmful effects of such parental conflicts on the child’s worldview.
Parents, caregivers, or family members worried about their relationships can access the program by emailing healthyrelationships@liverpool.gov.uk. They will have the opportunity to explore various support options and be referred to appropriate services. The program also includes help services that can be accessed through the local family hub, relationkit website, and Solihull online parenting program
