Olly Alexander’s dad has expressed surprise after his son’s song ‘Dizzy’ failed to receive any points from the public at the Eurovision this year. The UK entry finished in 18th place out of 25 countries with a total score of 46 points, which consisted only of the jury score. While some fans criticised Alexander’s vocals in the semi-finals, Alexander’s dad, David Thornton, said that the Eurovision still provided a fantastic learning experience for his son. Thornton also expressed his enjoyment of the event and opined that it was a surprise the public didn’t connect to the song as the juries had given it a really good score.

Nemo won this year’s Eurovision with their song ‘The Code’. It was Switzerland’s first Eurovision win since Celine Dion competed in 1988 with ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’. Croatia, Ukraine, France, and Israel rounded out the top 5, with Bambie Thug’s entry for Ireland placing sixth.

Nemo criticised the organisers at the post-show press conference for the Eurovision’s double standard and its policy of not allowing non-binary flags in the arena. The winner broke the crystal winner’s trophy and suggested that the Eurovision needed fixing. Nonetheless, they dedicated their win to people daring to be themselves and those who need to be heard and understood.

Bambie Thug, representing Ireland, was also critical of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which runs the Eurovision. They declared, “we are what the Eurovision is. The EBU is not what the Eurovision is. Fuck the EBU. I don’t even care anymore.” Irish entrant Bambie Thug honoured Nemo’s win and emphasised that the community behind the event and the love and support that sustained it were responsible for bringing change
