James Anderson retires: England bowler says it “feels like a good time” to stop

James Anderson, England’s leading wicket-taker, has announced that he will retire this summer. The 41-year-old’s decision comes after discussions with coach Brendon McCullum concerning the development of a new bowling attack. Anderson will retire after the first Test against West Indies, which takes place at Lord’s in July. 

Anderson is third in the list of all-time wicket-takers in Tests behind Spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne, with 700 wickets in 187 Tests. He feels it is the right time for him to retire and is happy to be doing so while still competing at a high level. Anderson has discussed the reasons behind his decision and the possibility of remaining with the England coaching staff.

Anderson revealed that he has talked to England captain Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum about potentially staying with the team in a different coaching capacity this summer. The cricket star also said he has not decided whether he will be continuing to play for his county later this season.

Richard Thompson, the chair of the England and Wales Cricket Board, has called for Anderson to be given a “send-off like no other” at Lord’s. Anderson stated that he has “not thought too much about” the finale but would like to end his career how he started – by bowling, showing his skills and helping the team win
