Olly Alexander, the former Years & Years star, has spoken out about his chances of winning the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Despite the bookies predicting his chances of winning are just one per cent, Alexander remains positive, saying “It’s better than zero”. This year, Alexander is representing the UK with his song ‘Dizzy’ and is one of the contest’s biggest stars, having previously been nominated for a Bafta, had two number one albums, and collaborated with the likes of Elton John and Kylie Minogue in his repertoire.
Eurovision host Graham Norton spoke highly of Alexander, stating “He has played to huge crowds, he can relate to the cameras, and he is used to high-pressure situations. Add to that, the fact that the song is a massive bop and I think we could do really well this year.”
Alexander has faced controversy in the lead up to the competition due to Israel’s participation, and while he supports “a ceasefire, returning the hostages, the safety and security of all people in Gaza. All the Palestinians and the people in Israel”, he believes that participating in Eurovision isn’t going to make a difference to these issues, and wants to come together with music.
Recently, the European Broadcasting Union issued a statement warning against the “abuse and harassment” artists were facing due to their participation. Whilst they firmly oppose any form of online abuse, hate speech, or harassment directed at their artists or any individuals associated with the contest, they have also recently confirmed that they reserve the right to remove Palestinian flags and pro-Palestinian symbols during the contest
