John Cale, the founder of The Velvet Underground, has recently shared his latest single ‘Shark-Shark’ and its intriguing music video. The song will be part of Cale’s upcoming record, ‘POPtical Illusion,’ scheduled for release on June 14 via Double Six/Domino. The musician announced his new album back in March, during which he revealed that he wrote over 80 songs during the pandemic.
According to the Welsh musician, ‘Shark-Shark’ has two versions that are both a nod to finding humour in music. “When you’re feeling too much of the real world, the best diversion is something that puts a grin on your face,” says Cale. “I don’t know how Abby & team kept this shoot together – being ‘unserious’ was a lot of fun!”
Cale has been inspired by hip-hop and how it “wields technology to create multi-dimensional textures or build surprising melodies.” ‘POPtical Illusion’ is a synthesis of those emotions and Cale’s past passions, with his magisterial voice webbing across it all. The album is expected to contain a dozen electronic playgrounds with puns and insights, grievances and quips, and some version of truth.
‘POPtical Illusion’ will be Cale’s first music release since his last album, ‘Mercy,’ in 2020. The record included guest spots from Animal Collective, Fat White Family, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, Actress and more. The Welsh musician’s first album in a decade also included a Weyes Blood collaboration ‘Story of Blood’ and the single ‘Noise of You.’
