Daniel Rooney, an up-and-coming singer from Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, had a night he’ll never forget when he stepped in for Olly Murs at a Take That gig in Glasgow on Friday night. Rooney had been playing a regular gig at the Radisson Red hotel when he was spotted by TV presenter Ross King. Murs was unable to make the gig due to transport issues and Rooney was drafted in at the last minute. Despite only playing to crowds of around 40 people, he found himself performing to 14,000 Take That fans.
Rooney said it all happened so fast that he didn’t have time to feel nervous. “I was more just focusing on what songs to sing,” he said. “I was more excited than anything else.” He was given some last-minute advice by Take That and when the gig finished, they gave him positive feedback. Frontman Gary Barlow shared his appreciation on Instagram: “This young man saved the day, thank you.” He added a picture of Rooney and three love heart emojis.
Rooney is still reeling from the experience, which he described as madness. “It’s been a whirlwind,” he told BBC News. “My phone’s not stopped for three days. It’s been really fun.” Rooney said he wants to enjoy his newfound fame and will spend the coming weeks recording some music. “I just want to keep it going and see where it all goes,” he said.
Olly Murs had been supporting Take That on their This Life tour and had updated fans throughout the day on his attempts to get to Glasgow. He had posted a video from inside his plane before exiting and attempting to board another flight. He eventually posted on social media that it was not going to happen. After their gigs in Glasgow, Take That are due to perform in Manchester this week.
