Richard Gadd, star of Baby Reindeer, was reportedly investigated by producer Clerkenwell Films after dating an actress who auditioned for the show. Reece Lyons briefly dated Gadd in 2021, after which she was asked to audition for the role of Teri. Although she did not name Gadd or explicitly reference Baby Reindeer on Twitter, Deadline confirmed that Gadd was the person under investigation. Following the investigation, Gadd was cleared of any wrongdoing. However, Lyons was not interviewed in person, but corresponded in writing.
Lyons recalls meeting Gadd in the bar of London’s Bush Theatre in October 2021, after she had performed her one-woman show, Overflow. Gadd offered to buy her a drink and then went on to talk about his upcoming Netflix show that he had written. The role in question was that of his ex-girlfriend, a trans woman. The actress was interested in the role and told Gadd to get in touch with her agent. The pair then went on four dates, but Gadd ended things. Despite this, Lyons alleges that she tried to break things off more than once out of concerns about conflating dates with the audition process.
Lyons submitted her self-taped audition in March 2022, and the writer gave feedback to Clerkenwell Films on audition tapes. Although Gadd did not have final approval on the casting, he did give his feedback. The role of Teri went to Nava Mau. Lyons did not feel like the victim of abuse and emphasised that in a tweet.
