Billy Idol, the iconic rocker, has opened up about his journey to sobriety. The 68-year-old singer has now become “California sober”, giving up alcohol and hard drugs but still consuming marijuana. In an interview with People, he shared that he does not see himself as a drug addict anymore. He said that he achieved some discipline in his life where he is “not really the same kind of guy” he was in the 80s.
Idol revealed that his decision to become sober came after he had a horrific motorcycle accident in 1990 that almost caused him the loss of a leg. He admitted that it took him a long time to become sober, but then he realized he should try and not be a drug addict anymore. He was grateful to have achieved discipline in his life and be a different person today.
The ‘Dancing With Myself’ singer can now enjoy himself without overdoing it. Idol revealed that he has reached a point in life where he can have a glass of wine now and again, but he is not the drug addict he was in the peak ’70s or ’80s. He termed himself as “California sober” where he can do what he wants but chooses not to do it. Idol said that if he tells himself he cannot do anything, he wants to do it; whereas if he allows himself, he will not do it.
In the interview, Idol said that even though the AA program would say you’re always a drug addict, he does not have to do anything that much anymore. He believes that he overcame the addiction and is lucky because many others can’t. He added that his friends from the old days are sober, including guitarist Billy Morrison in his band and Steve Stevens, his guitarist, who are both sober.
