Kendrick Lamar’s latest diss track against Drake, titled ‘Euphoria’, includes a reversed sample of a line from the 1978 film ‘The Wiz’. Fans have discovered that the jumbled audio in the intro of the six-minute-long track features dialogue from the film, which when reversed, says, “Everything they say about me is true”. This line is spoken by Richard Pryor’s character, Herman Smith, in a scene where he confesses his true identity as a washed-up politician from Atlantic City.
Lamar’s inclusion of ‘The Wiz’ may also be connected to his verse on ‘Like That’, a collaborative track with Future and Metro Boomin, which was released last month. In the verse, Lamar compares his work and contributions to that of the late Prince, after Drake had compared himself to Michael Jackson on his collaboration with J. Cole on ‘First Person Shooter’. Jackson famously portrayed the Scarecrow in ‘The Wiz’.
Lamar’s ‘Euphoria’ marks the first time he has addressed Drake directly in a diss track, calling the ‘Hotline Bling’ rapper a “scam artist” and a “master manipulator”, while also questioning his abilities as a father.
Following the release of ‘Euphoria’, Drake responded on his Instagram stories with a scene from the film ’10 Things I Hate About You’, seemingly mocking Lamar’s lyrics. Meanwhile, other musicians and comedians have also weighed in on the feud, with Kanye West dropping his own remix of ‘Like That’ and comedian Munya Chawawa releasing his own parody Lamar diss track
