Manchester City football star Erling Haaland has become the newest character in popular mobile game Clash of Clans. Developer Supercell has announced that an animated version of Haaland will be the Barbarian King in the game, which allows players to recruit him to join their team or try to conquer his village. Haaland himself is a long-time fan of the game, which has been downloaded more than two billion times since its release over a decade ago. The Norwegian striker’s character is the first in the game to be based on a real-life person.
Clash of Clans is a fantasy game in which players build their own villages and battle other players to gain power. Haaland’s partnership with the game represents an exciting new direction for video game/celebrity partnerships. Other recent collaborations include Fortnite’s team-up with Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, as well as Call of Duty’s alliance with Nicki Minaj. Haaland has a previous video game cover appearance on EA FC 24, formerly known as FIFA.
Stuart McGaw, general manager of Clash of Clans, said that Haaland becoming a playable character was a “dream scenario” for the game’s team. He added that they “did everything we could to bring him, one of the world’s best athletes, into the world of the game so our players could enjoy a truly special moment.” For his part, Haaland seemed excited about the collaboration, revealing that he knows “everything” about the game and is thrilled to be an in-game character.
Haaland announced his new partnership with Clash of Clans via a trailer on his social media account. He wrote: “From the pitch to the battlefield! I’m the new Barbarian King in Clash of Clans.” The announcement has generated excitement among football fans and regular players of the game alike.
