Martin Freeman, the star of The Hobbit, has addressed the criticism that has arisen from his new film Miller’s Girl. The American film was released in January and sees Freeman play the role of the professor of an 18-year-old student played by Jenna Ortega. Described as an erotic thriller, the film explores the intimate and complex relationship between the two and contains scenes of a sexual nature, leading to a backlash over the 31-year age difference between the actors.
In an interview with The Times, Freeman made a defence of the film, stating that it is “grown-up and nuanced”. The star emphasised that its portrayal of the relationship does not indicate that he approves of the situation. “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?’” he noted. Freeman went on to discuss acting more generally, defending the portrayal of complex or controversial roles. He specifically cited Steven Spielberg’s 1993 war film Schindler’s List in making the case.
In response to the negative attention the film has received, the movie’s intimacy coordinator, Kristina Arjona, commented on the care that was given to ensure the comfort of the actors. She went on to highlight the importance of supporting actors in taking decisions that they are comfortable with.
Earlier this year, Jenna Ortega, Freeman’s co-star in Miller’s Girl, revealed her favourite film and actor of all time.
