​Moby comments on feud with Aphex Twin: “It rubbed me the wrong way”

During a recent interview with Stereogum, Moby reflected on his longstanding feud with Aphex Twin that began over three decades ago during a joint tour with Orbital. Moby stated that the feud with Aphex Twin “rubbed me the wrong way” and that there was a “sadness” to it. Moby went on to explain that he had liked Aphex Twin’s records and enjoyed touring with him initially, feeling that they were all “in this together.” However, the conflict began when Moby insisted on travelling by plane to each show, while the others used the tour bus, causing tension between the pair.

According to Moby, the feud became more heated when Aphex Twin reportedly called him a “buffoon” during an interview with a journalist at the time, stating that he “couldn’t understand” why Moby was booked on the same tour. Speaking on Thump’s Rave Curious podcast in 2016, Moby stated that he was a fan of Aphex Twin at the time but that it was hard to enjoy his music after their clash.

Despite the feud, Moby added that he doesn’t have any “ill will” towards anyone, but explained that there was a “collective embarrassment about the emotional expression of rave culture.” Moby concluded the interview by saying that he loves underground electronic music and that his passion for the genre dates back to the ’70s and ’80s.

It appears the longstanding feud between Moby and Aphex Twin has yet to be resolved, but the two electronic music icons continue to make their mark on the industry
