Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has confirmed that he is working on a sequel to the 2010 film The Social Network, which will focus on the January 6 riots. The previous film examined the origins of Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and won Sorkin an Oscar. Sorkin blamed Facebook for the recent riots, during which supporters of former US President Donald Trump breached the Capitol building in Washington DC during an attempt to certify Joe Biden’s victory. The writer argued that the social media giant had optimised its algorithm to promote divisive material, thereby exploiting the most extreme user responses.
Talking on The Town podcast, Sorkin teased that listeners would need to buy a cinema ticket to hear more about his plans for the new film. He has spoken previously about the possibility of making a sequel to The Social Network, revealing in 2019 that “a lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss Twins and Eduardo Saverin”.
Sorkin has previously created a number of acclaimed television series, including The West Wing. Last year, he explained that he believed he would never write again after suffering a stroke.
