Bill Wyman opens up about his exit from The Rolling Stones – and life since

Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has spoken about his life after leaving the band, including his decision to pursue other interests such as archaeology, writing books, and playing charity cricket. The 87-year-old, who was a member of the Stones from 1962 to 1993, revealed that he left the band in 1991, but the other members refused to believe him until 1993. Wyman returned on the band’s 2023 album “Hackney Diamonds,” playing on the fast-paced jam “Live By the Sword,” but later said he would “never” join them again.

Wyman has spent the last 30 years hunting for treasure as a metal detectorist and collecting various things, including stamps, music hall posters, and Rupert Bear annuals. He said he has the whole series of Rupert Bear annuals right up to the present day, as well as various other items such as scarves, badges, and postage stamps related to the cartoon character. Wyman even joked that he could fill a museum with his collection of Rupert Bear memorabilia.

The former Stones bassist also shared his thoughts on reunion performances, saying that going back to things can never be the same. Although Wyman performed with the band for their 50th-anniversary gigs at London’s O2 Arena in 2012, he said he would never do so again, insisting that he had “better things to do.” Wyman added that his children saw him on stage with the Stones, but he had thought he’d be more involved, and found it disappointing that he was only invited to perform on two songs.

Wyman’s last performance with the Stones was in 1991, and he officially left the band in 1993. Although he’s gone on to pursue other interests, such as writing books and hunting for treasure with a metal detector, he’s kept a close friendship with his former bandmates, even joining them in the studio for the recording of their 2023 album. However, he’s made it clear that he won’t be performing with the band again in the future
