Buckingham Palace has issued its first official update on the health of King Charles since he was diagnosed with cancer, announcing that he is “responding exceptionally well to treatment”. The statement did not specify what treatment he has been receiving and there remains no date for its conclusion. The King has had to cancel a number of events this year, but will resume engagements next week with a visit to a cancer treatment centre.
The announcement suggests that King Charles could be well enough to host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit in June. Buckingham Palace usually rolls out the full red-carpet treatment on such occasions. The statement, along with a photograph of the King and Queen in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, has helped to boost morale among the royals following a difficult year in which the Princess of Wales also faced a cancer diagnosis.
King Charles is known for his enthusiasm for public encounters and it will be interesting to see how his illness affects his reign. He is due to attend several major summer events, including garden parties, Trooping the Colour and D-Day commemorations.
