Ebbw Vale: Teen arrested after school placed in lockdown

A school in Ebbw Vale, Wales, has lifted its partial lockdown, which was implemented after a pupil allegedly received threats and a teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of making these threats. Gwent Police received a call at around 10:20 BST on Friday and attended the secondary campus of the Ebbw Fawr Learning Community. The arrest did not take place in Ebbw Vale and not on the school premises. The police are still investigating the situation.

Shortly after the lockdown was lifted, many parents arrived at the school to pick up their children. Large numbers of pupils are being handed over to their parents one by one. Some parents who arrived at the school were told that the lessons would resume after lunch. They had been notified of the situation via text messages from the school. One of these messages read: “All students are safe in classrooms and all doors and access points are locked. The police have arrived and there is no risk inside the building.”

The Ebbw Fawr Learning Community incident occurred less than 48 hours after two teachers and a pupil were stabbed at a school in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. Gwent Police confirmed that inquiries were ongoing.

The incident at Ebbw Vale school is a reminder of the importance of school safety measures in the current climate. The lockdown has been seen as an effective method of keeping students safe while the situation is managed by the authorities. It remains unclear what measures the school will take to ensure the safety of its students in the future, but it is a certainty that the topic will remain a public concern as long as security threats continue to arise
