Slipknot recently performed a gig in Pioneertown, California, where they debuted their new drummer. The unidentified drummer has replaced Jay Weinberg, who was fired from the band last year. Fans suspected former Sepultura percussionist Eloy Casagrande could be the new drummer due to visual similarities, but Slipknot is yet to confirm or deny this speculation.
During the gig, Slipknot members wore their 1999 masks, in celebration of the band’s 25th anniversary. The performance showcased the band’s iconic sound, with Corey Taylor declaring 2019 as “19-fucking-99” on stage.
This event marks one of the band’s comeback shows, after it had to cancel a number of gigs with Metallica last year. Slipknot is treading the comeback cautiously and has said that it is going “back to basics” for 2019. The band will be returning to the UK for their’ self-titled debut album’ tour, which marks the 25 years of the album’s release.
Slipknot founder and percussionist, Shawn Crahan, spoke about the adjustments in the band’s schedule in an interview with NME: “I’m ready to move on from what has been, and move onto a world that I know needs to be. For instance, normally we’d have about two years on and one-and-a-half years off — we’re not doing that anymore… Instead of two years, we’re taking one year off. So three years on, one year off, three years on, one year off. That’s the new Slipknot.”
This return epitomizes a change in the band’s direction, along with the addition of a new drummer, it gives rise to intrigue and curiosity. Slipknot indeed seems to be taking things “back to basics”, but that only makes fans all the more excited to find out what’s in store for the band’s future
