Quentin Tarantino had plans to bring back iconic characters from his earlier films in his now-scrapped final movie project, The Movie Critic. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Tarantino wished to invite some of the stars of his previous works to “play fictional versions of themselves as the actors who played those characters” or star in “movie-within-a-movie” moments for a Tarantino “meta-verse” of sorts. Tarantino had been attached to the project as a lead actor, and other actors who had previously worked with the director were rumoured to be joining the production as well.
According to sources, the director had rewritten the film’s script and delayed production due to last year’s writer and actor strikes. Although he did not provide many details about the film’s plot, Tarantino had revealed that The Movie Critic was to be centred around a real-life film journalist who he often read as a child. The journalist wrote about mainstream movies and was a “very good critic” with a cynical outlook.
Tarantino’s retirement plans have garnered a variety of reactions from the film world. Director Christopher Nolan characterised it as “very purist.” In contrast, French director Luc Besson claimed to have given Tarantino the idea to retire after ten movies. However, Tarantino is now working on an entirely new project for his final film, having “changed his mind” on The Movie Critic and reportedly abandoned it altogether.
As a prolific and successful director with numerous critically acclaimed films under his belt, Tarantino’s retirement announcement was met with quite a bit of attention and intrigue. He stated that he planned to stop making films after his tenth movie and has remained true to his word so far.
