Zsela Thompson, a native of New York City, is set to release her debut album “Big For You” this summer. This album is a testament to self-reflection and collaboration with her close friends, Marc Ribot, Nick Hakim, Casey MQ, and Jasper Marsalis. It is also her first recording for Mexican Summer. “Big For You” explores a textured wonderland through tender, dramatic, and lively sonics with equal emotional potency and considered storytelling.
Produced by Daniel Aged (Frank Ocean, Kelela) and Gabe Wax (The War On Drugs, Soccer Mommy), Zsela’s distinct, rich, and smooth voice is complimented by dynamic instrumentation that dances around her. Although the album incorporates echoes of multiple influences, tracks like “Fire Escape” and “Easy Street” are unmistakably reminiscent of Prince’s art-rock and alt-R&B.
The creation of the album took Zsela and her friends four years, producing depth and setting her up for a versatile journey of creativity and self-expression. Her exciting debut full-length is just the beginning as she takes these exciting tracks into the wilds of the live space. Zsela is one to watch out for.
Zsela’s project is part of Rough Trade On The Rise, a dedicated curation that sheds light on up-and-coming musicians the company is most excited for people to hear. Do not miss out on Zsela’s debut album “Big For You,” available on Mexican Summer
