Interpol played their biggest show to date in front of a crowd of over 150,000 people in Mexico City, at the Zócalo square in the city centre. The New York band announced the free show earlier in the month and played a set of 21 songs from across their career. They heavily leaned on tracks from “Turn on the Bright Lights” and “Antics”, their first two albums.
The band played tracks including “Obstacle 1”, “Lights” and “Not Even Jail”. Interpol have performed big shows in Mexico previously, including 2019 and 2023 Corona Capital Mexico City and Corona Capital Guadalajara festivals, respectively. They also played at the 26,000-capacity Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City in 2022.
Following their Mexico show, the band has several United States festivals lined up and is preparing for their “Antics” 20th anniversary UK tour, scheduled for November. Guitarist, Daniel Kessler, spoke with NME about touring the album and said: “It might not seem that much of a stretch for a band to play an album in sequence, but it really is. It’s sequenced for the record in a very intentional way, but performing it as such means going from first gear to fourth gear and vice versa.”
Regarding new music, Kessler said “We’re writing a lot this year and we don’t have any specific recording plans, but we’re working on it in between all this touring. It’s a little too early [to reveal how it sounds] but it’s exciting, that’s for sure.” The band released their seventh and latest studio album, “The Other Side of Make-Believe”, in 2022
