Residents of Cromwell Tower in London are protesting against a power generator used by Linklaters which they claim is causing them headaches and nausea. The generator is said to be emitting fumes that are affecting the health of residents in surrounding apartment blocks. Linklaters lost power last month due to a transformer failure and installed the generator as an emergency measure. The law firm has said that it is working with the City of London, which is responsible for environmental health, to address the issue.
Sarah Stobbs, who has lived in Cromwell Tower for 14 years, said that the situation was “not liveable”. She stated that her family had returned from a vacation to find the flat full of fumes from the generator. Ms Stobbs contacted environmental health officials from the City of London, who have acknowledged the problem and have indicated that they are working with the law firm to find a solution. She believes that the crux of the issue is that “they are prioritising their convenience over the health of their neighbours”.
Linklaters has moved the generator to a new location and reduced its operating hours, but according to Ms Stobbs, a new transformer for the tower is expected to take four months to install. She fears that during this time, residents will be unable to open their windows and that the situation will remain unsustainable. Linklaters has stated that it hopes to resolve the power outage as soon as possible and is doing everything it can to work with the City of London and the Barbican Residents’ Association to mitigate the impact of its temporary generator.
Noise and pollution complaints in the City of London are taken very seriously, according to the City of London Corporation. The corporation and Linklaters will continue to explore further improvements to address the problem
