Val Garland and Dominic Skinner are the names behind some of the most groundbreaking and shocking looks in the beauty industry. Garland has adorned Björk’s face with crystals, given Lady Gaga facial spikes, and covered Cate Blanchett in red paint, whilst Skinner has worked on the runways of Jean-Paul Gaultier and Dame Vivienne Westwood. Together, they are the judges for the BBC’s make-up competition show, “Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star,” hosted by supermodel Leomie Anderson.

The pair recently opened up about some of the key moments in their careers, including their first ever jobs. Dom started as a part-time Christmas temp at the Body Shop, where he discovered his love for makeup, and decided to switch from his degree in menswear at the London College of Fashion. Meanwhile, Val transitioned from being a computer programmer to becoming a hairdresser in Bristol, before moving to Australia to set up her own salon and start work with makeup.

Val’s first-ever makeup looks were inspired by the 80s club scene in Australia, where she wasn’t interested in beauty, but creating an outrageous character to catch attention. Meanwhile, Dom was knocking on every agent’s door during fashion season to work backstage at shows, and eventually found himself backstage in Milan.

The two have also collaborated with fashion icons such as Kate Moss, and created some of the most memorable makeup looks for Lady Gaga. They recall working with her during her early career, where she reminded them of themselves and their fearless attitude towards makeup.

In recent years, Val and Dom have become judges on “Glow Up,” where they nurture and mentor some of the UK’s best makeup artists. The pair are known for their constructive critiques, with Val’s “ding dong” catchphrase becoming a signature line when a make-up artist does an outstanding job. The pair is proud of the opportunities that the show has presented to aspiring make-up artists, including working on Doctor Who, London Fashion Week, and with legendary drag queens
