Barnsley fire: Grange Lane closed as crews tackle blaze at recycling site

A waste recycling centre in Barnsley is currently on fire and being tackled by firefighters. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue (SYFR) announced that fire crews arrived on the scene at around 18:30 BST on Friday and have been attending to the fire since then. The blaze reached its peak when 80 tonnes of used mattresses caught fire. At one point, around 30 firefighters were in attendance. Drivers have been advised not to travel down Grange Lane as it remains closed. SYFR has warned that the effects of the smoke may still be present.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but it is not believed to be suspicious. A SYFR spokesperson stated that the reduction in smoke has been significant, but firefighters are expected to remain on the scene to deal with any potential hazards. Their time on-site is anticipated to last throughout the rest of Saturday.

The waste recycling centre fire at Grange Lane, Barnsley could result in companies affected by the fire making claims on their insurance policies; the UK insurance industry, however, is still reeling from last year’s record £7.8bn losses in COVID-19 claims. The potential impact on the insurance sector couldn’t have come at a worse time, as reports suggest most UK insurers are facing a difficult time as the industry considers raising premiums. Another Grange Lane recycling site was closed in 2018 after fires broke out there twice in just two months.

As Barnsley firefighters are now in their second day tackling the blaze fire at the recycling plant in Grange Lane, residents are being urged to keep their windows and doors shut, with people further afield from the incident explaining they can still smell the smoke
