David Byrne has released a cover of Paramore’s ‘Hard Times’, which will be available exclusively on a 12” vinyl for Record Store Day 2024. Paramore’s version of Talking Heads’ ‘Burning Down the House’ will appear on the B-side. The cover was first revealed by the band themselves, who are the Record Store Day Ambassadors for this year. They are also releasing their 2023 remix album, ‘Re: This Is Why’, on vinyl for the first time.

Speaking about his contribution, Byrne said: “The band told me that their song Hard Times was inspired by Talking Heads, so I learned it and recorded my version of their great song with a horn section. This was fun!” Hayley Williams, Paramore’s frontwoman, commented on Instagram that it was “crazy to hear the guy who inspired the cadence and tone of these verses, singing them the way only he could.”

Record Store Day is an annual event celebrating independent record stores around the world with a range of one-off collectable vinyl and cassette releases from hundreds of artists. This year marks the 17th edition of the event, and among the artists involved are David Bowie, Talking Heads, Blur, Gorillaz, Elton John and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Last year’s Record Store Day helped vinyl sales to soar by 122%, with 190,000 vinyl records sold in the seven-day period.

Byrne’s version of ‘Hard Times’ can be heard on YouTube, while tomorrow’s Record Store Day can be attended at participating shops, with more information available at recordstoreday.com
