Larian Studios has announced that it is currently working on two new games that are based on original intellectual properties. Earlier this year, the studio stated that it would not be developing Baldur’s Gate 4, nor would it be creating any notable new content for Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the studio has now revealed that it will be focusing on developing its own IPs instead.
According to an official blog post, both of the new projects remain in the early stages of development. The post also noted that “the sensibilities that brought you Baldur’s Gate 3 are alive and well here at the Larian castle”. The team is driven to create immersive experiences that are shaped by player choices.
The post also provides a statement from Larian CEO, Swen Vincke, to assuage concerns surrounding the announcement. Vincke remarked, “I don’t know if we’re going to pull it off, but looking at our narrative, visual and gameplay plans, I think what we’re working on now will be our best work ever.” He added that he was frustrated about not being able to show off his team’s work yet.
Prior to this announcement, Vincke noted that the next project from Larian Studios was “not what you think”. He also said that fans should be “very excited” about the future, following the news that the studio was not continuing the Baldur’s Gate franchise.
Recently, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the Baldur’s Gate IP was once again under their control, which led to speculation surrounding the development of the next Baldur’s Gate title. Hasbro’s Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing, Eugene Evans, has said that many partners have expressed interest in the franchise and that they hope to find a partner for the project
