Taylor Swift has surprised fans by revealing that her latest album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology’, released two hours earlier, is actually a double album. The singer wrote on social media that the album initially began as a result of her having written “so much tortured poetry in the past two years,” and wanting to share it with her fans. As such, the 15 add-on tracks on her now-complete album include eight songs which were originally featured on the first instalment of ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ and seven brand new recordings.

Although Swift titled her announcement of the new album a “2am surprise”, the album is already available as a 31-track audio stream. Among the creations now available to fans are songs such as ‘The Black Dog’, ‘iamgonnagetyouback’, ‘The Albatross’, ‘Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus’, and ‘How Did It End?’

Swift has previously released genre-bending albums, mixing elements of pop, country and folk music. Nevertheless, the latest album received a three-star review from NME. Laura Molloy wrote: “The pitfalls that mire her 11th studio album are all the more disappointing – she’s proven time and time again she can do better. To a Melbourne audience of her ‘Eras Tour,’ Swift said that ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ came from a ‘need’ to write. It’s just that maybe we didn’t need to hear it.”

Thus, while ‘The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology’ may be less formally structured as a double album, Swift’s fans will now find plenty of material to enjoy in her latest work. What began as an excess of “tortured poetry” has been transformed into a comprehensive album that fans can explore
