Norwegian indie rock band Pom Poko has announced its third studio album, entitled ‘Champion’, set to be released on August 16 via Bella Union. The new work will follow their 2019 debut album ‘Birthday’, and 2021’s critically acclaimed ‘Cheater’. To celebrate the announcement, they shared the lead single ‘Champion’, which offers a stripped-back and chirpy sound and is available to stream now.

The quartet, consisting of vocalist Ragnhild Fangel Jamtveit, bassist Jonas Krøvel, guitarist Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne, and drummer Ola Djupvik, has grown as musicians and individuals over the eight years they have worked together. “It feels like we’re maturing and growing up together,” explained Jamtveit, “It’s like we’re evolving”. The band are beginning to appreciate what they’ve built together, which feels like a weird and really lovely little gang to hang out in.

The band recalled how the lead single encapsulates their desired sound for the remainder of the album and provides more space to experiment with their new direction. “You maybe wouldn’t put it on at the spa or something, but it’s not as quick-firing as a lot of our other stuff has been,” said Tonne. “Everyone knew what they were supposed to do,” continued Djupvik, suggesting that achieving telepathy from working together is a sign of their development.

The band have also shared the album artwork and tracklist. The new album consists of eleven tracks: ‘Growing Story’, ‘My Family’, ‘Champion’, ‘You’re Not Helping’, ‘Pile Of Wood’, ‘Bell’, ‘Go’, ‘Never Saw It Coming’, ‘Druid, Fox And Dragon’, ‘Big Life’, and ‘Fumble’. Fans can now pre-order the upcoming album.

Pom Poko recently began a co-headline UK tour with Bella Union labelmates Personal Trainer, which started on April 19 and ends on May 24. It’s exciting to see what new heights they’ve reached in sound and growth, and fans will be eagerly waiting for the release of ‘Champion
